Nestled in the enchanting landscapes of central Portugal, the Verde family has cultivated a legacy of producing homemade olive oil using traditional methods that have been passed down through generations. Inspired by their rich heritage and deep-rooted connection to the land, we present our design for a guest house that harmoniously blends with the natural surroundings while embracing utilitarianism and sustainable design practices.

Our vision for the guest house revolves around creating an immersive experience for visitors, where they can not only appreciate the exquisite flavors of the Verde family’s olive oils but also find respite in the tranquility of the surroundings. With a focus on utilising local materials and drawing from the region’s architectural aesthetics, we have crafted a space that pays homage to the family’s legacy while providing modern comforts.

At the heart of our design lies the olive oil tasting room, a sacred space that captures the essence of the Verde family’s craft. To honor this heritage, we have placed a magnificent olive tree at the center of the tasting room, symbolizing the strong roots that have sustained the family’s traditions. This unique communal space, encouraging guests to come together, share stories, and savor the extraordinary flavors of the homemade olive oils.

Additionally, we have created a separate warm living room adorned with a comforting fireplace, where guests can unwind, connect with one another, and bask in the friendly ambiance. This cozy retreat, conveniently situated near the dining area, serves as a gathering place where memories are made and friendships are forged.

To ensure a harmonious integration with the natural surroundings, our design incorporates various levels, terraces, and roof gardens. These thoughtfully designed spaces allow guests to immerse themselves in the breathtaking vistas of the landscape while providing ample opportunities for relaxation and contemplation. Wooden louvers cast mesmerizing shadows, inviting guests to enjoy moments of tranquility beneath their soothing shelter.

In keeping with the spirit of sustainable design, our choice of construction materials reflects the region’s heritage and environmental consciousness. We utilize regional treasures such as red clay bricks and wood from autochthonous trees, including cork, olive, pine, and oak, creating a connection between the guest house and its natural setting. Traditional Portuguese elements, such as white-washed walls and Azuleos tiles, add a touch of authenticity and cultural significance to the interior spaces.

Our design for the guest house of the Verde family is a testament to their enduring legacy, embodying the principles of utilitarianism, sustainable design, and a deep appreciation for the natural world. It is an invitation for guests to immerse themselves in the Verde family’s history, relish in the beauty of the Portuguese countryside, and forge lasting memories in a space that embraces tradition, comfort, and community.
